Four Alabama corrections officers were indicted by a federal grand jury this week in connection with the beating of a prisoner.

“The A.D.O.C. unequivocally does not tolerate excessive use-of-force,” the spokeswoman, Samantha Rose, said. “We are committed to investigating and addressing allegations of excessive use-of-force, including bringing potential incidents to the attention of authorities, as we did in this case.”

Prosecutors said that Mr. Thomas and Officer Blaylock, along with Mr. Finch, struck a male inmate several times with batons while the prisoner was lying on the ground in the fetal position.

The episode started after the prisoner ran out of his cell and was taken to the ground by officers, according to the indictment, which said that Mr. Thomas kicked the inmate and struck him in the head with his hands. The inmate was injured in the altercation, according to the indictment, which did not elaborate on his condition.

Mr. Thomas then falsified an officer statement, claiming that all force had ceased once the inmate was on the ground, the indictment said. Sergeant Walker corroborated the false account in an incident report, prosecutors said.

A public defender listed for Officer Blaylock did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday. It was not immediately clear if Mr. Finch, Mr. Thomas or Sergeant Walker had lawyers, and none were listed for them in court records.
